John Mayer Trio- Out Of My Mind

John really shows off his blues guitar skills in this trio. I love John Mayer and most songs that he puts out, but he should really do some more blues. Sometimes I wanna just lay back and listen to John’s guitar sing instead of his voice.

And After a VERY LONG Delay…..

Gamma Talk is FINALLY back with a new post.

Todays Post: SupernovasHypernovas, and one very very CLASSIC song that needs no review ;).

First up: Supernovas and Hypernovas.

Now many of you know what a supernova is but for those of you that dont, its the death of a star. More importantly, the explosion of a star. These supernovas are extremely amazing phenomena, for many reasons. To list a few, they can emit more energy than our Sun can in its entire life time, they create elements that we cherish to much such as gold, and if they’re large enough, they can go under gravitational collapse and create a black hole. Many possibilities come out of these stellar explosions, and up until recently it was thought that scientists pretty much had supernovas figured out. In 2005 the light from a star that exploded 220 million years ago had finally reached earth, and what made this star so special was that it was a star that died before its time. The death of this star is putting into question the theory of supernovas and how much we actually know about the life and death of stars. As for Hypernovas, well this is the explosion of a star that is about 100 to 150 times the mass of our own sun, stars like VY Caniris Majoris, which we discussed. These explosions have been proposed to be the source of gamma ray bursts, due to the their similarities in that gamma rays are shot out at the poles at nearly the speed of light, and a black hole is created through a core collapse due to the mass of the giant stars. This proposal is loosely accepted as a truth in the science world however. Overall these stellar explosions are true marvels. They are extremely powerful bursts of energy and can even out shine a galaxy, and well hey they give us gold ;).

Next up…Music!

Todays song is well.. just awesome! So awesome that in fact i think thats the only review it needs! Its a classic with ridiculously high vocals that make you not want to even sing along around friends (unless you enjoy embarrassing yourself), kick ass guitar shredding, and sweet lyrics, what else could you want?

Todays song: The Darkness- I Believe In a Thing Called Love

(song below)

P.S. make sure to read the guest post from @thegame40, and to read up on contest details

Talk to me until next time!

Love you all

O word? A Guest Post?! Hell yea, a guest post ;). From a kick ass girl in Cali

What’s up all you Astronomy Monomaniacs! This is a ‘guest post’ from @thegame40 on Twitter!

Astronomers are calling Galaxy NGC 4945 ‘Milky Ways Not-So-Distant Cousin/Twin’.  At 13 million light years away, the galaxy was first discovered in 1826.  With its spiraling arms and bar shaped central region, it is located in the constellation Centaurus.  Though not an identical twin, the difference between our galaxy and NGC 4945 is its highly energetic center which is suspected to be the cause of a Supermassive Black Hole!

Since this galaxy is our Galactic Relative, why not come up with a more impressive name!  Which is why I propose, on behalf of @gammatalk, we have a competition!

Submit your NGC 4945 name via Comment or Twitter.  The winner with the most creative name will receive….a Twit or Comment Response saying how imaginative and creative you are! Yay, a social networking pat on the back!  Sorry that is all we can afford at the moment!

Please, let’s do this Galaxy some justice and not name it after another candy bar!  But if we have to, I am all for the‘Watchamacallit Galaxy’.

Obscura

Keeping up with the theme…is a Death Metal band called Obscura!  The band hails from Germany!  Their latest album is titled ‘Cosmogenesis’!  Seriously, for someone like me, a self proclaimed Sadistic Sky Gazing Metal Head Enthusiast, their art is orgasms to my ears!!!  With song titles such as, ‘The Anticosmic Overload’ and ‘Universe Momentum’ how can you not give them a listen, whether you’re into Metal or not!

The one thing that stands out about this band is their bass player Jeroen Paul Thesseling.  The dude plays a 6 STRING FRETLESS BASS!  Come on; name some bass players who would dare play a 6 String Fretless as skillfully, I dare you haha!

The technicality of this band is really unmatched.  Yes it’s metal, but every song flows, its very progressive and very melodic!

All I know is that this is perfect background music to our Universes Showcase of Cosmic Destruction!

Great post!

If someone does come up with the best name, I’ll let them write their own guest post! Send me some names! Keep up the good work everyone!

Till next time!

Putting Things Into Perspective.

Todays Post: How small we are and… Westbound Train

It never ceases to amaze me. How small we are, its ridiculous, in fact we should probably stop referring to everything we create, make, or manage, as large, big, huge, or any other synonym you can think of. Now for those of you who have not had a chance to go to the Hayden Planetarium, I suggest you go, not only do they have great films (including one on cosmic collisions <3) ,but they a great scale showing how small we are, it truly humbles ones mind, I highly recommend going! To demonstrate our own scale we’ll start with the earth and the sun, think about how large the sun is, Jupiter can fit inside the sun about 900 times, thats a pretty large Star right? Wrong. Our star, for those of you who are still unaware, is rather medium size, a baby when compared to some of the Hypergiants we find in the Universe. The best, and biggest example?  Well that would be the star VY Canaris Majoris, (as displayed in the picture above) the largest KNOWN star in the Universe. This is a TRUE example of small we are, think about it. The Sun is only a spec off of a curve of that star, and Earth doesn’t even come close to comparing with the Sun. So Think about how large is large the next time you speak, think about VY Canaris Majoris, and if what your talking about is close to the size of that star, than by all means go ahead and call it large ;). Now this star, VY Canaris Majoris, is a Red Hypergiant star, for a more mathematical example to how large the star is would be that it takes light 8 hours to cross this star, and keep in mind LIGHT MOVES AT 670,616,629 MPH. Thats pretty damn fast, it only takes light 8 minutes to reach us from the Sun, hopefully your mind is being blown by how large this star is. Overall its important to remember how insignificant we are. The Universe didn’t notice when the Earths biggest celebrities passed away, and it sure as hell won’t notice when the Earth it self finally runs out of time. Space is large, we’re not.

And now..

Westbound Train

REGGAE! Its always so soothing. This band truly knows how to hit that warm spot in you. Sitting and down and listening to this bands smooth, soft, and harmonious lyrics never fails to calm me down. The album Transitions” has catchy songs such as“Please Forgive Me”, and one song that should be listened to by everyone, “I’m No Different”. The smooth horns (most notably the saxophone) provide such a peaceful feeling that just makes you want to close your eyes and replay their solos over and over. Their new album “Come and Get It” takes on more of a soulful approach with a heavier emphasis on the keyboard, but they still maintain their reggae sound which is what is most important. Overall if your looking for some kick ass reggae with smooth creamy vocals, check out Westbound Train. They are sure to make you feel better on one of those “worst day of my life” kind of days. Hopefully none of you have those any time soon ;).

Till Next Time

Disney buys Marvel! What a way to start the day!

Well if you have yet to hear the news… Disney is buying Marvel! This is a big business deal, Disney is purchasing marvel entertainment for a slim $4 billion, acquiring the rites to Marvels some 5,000 characters including Spider Man, Captain America, The Hulk, Iron Man, and many more, you name it, Disney now has it. Disney hasbeen taking some hits for a while now, I don’t think they would ever go out,but their business, especially stock wise has been dipping for a while now, acquiring Marvel however should give them a nice boost i cash flow ;).

Now lets just hope the Marvel movies don’t become animated, G rated super flops!

Hrmm… Pretty Exciting News!

Well it seems that a team of Brittish astronomers found a planet that seemingly defies the laws of physics! Its interesting, the planet is extremely massive, 10X the size of jupiter, and orbits its star in under 24 hours, the planet is about 1 billion years old, the temperatures on the planet exceed 2,100 C, if someone was able to survive on the planet they might see diamonds and sapphires in the sky (similar to Uranus and Neptune) Unfortunately, this planet does not have much time left. :( It will however die in a cosmic collision, and those are just my absolute favorite =D!

Read more on this planet and its future death —> HERE
